The Credit Repair Organizations Act, or CROA, makes it illegal for credit repair companies to lie about their services and results, and sets some additional rules. If you think you might be the victim of a credit repair scam, or if you’ve had other issues with a credit repair company, you can submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

When I first started my personal finance journey over 7 years ago, one piece of advice I found a lot of “money gurus” shared was that it wasn’t important to know your credit score. Instead, what was more important was to check your credit report. To be fair, that’s not bad advice per se. Your credit report is important to check at least once annually (I’ll dive into that a bit more shortly). Still, I found it odd that they were essentially saying “Don’t worry about that, it’s not important” when in actual fact knowing your credit scores and understanding how they work is important!
Any account that shows on your credit report is a tradeline. This includes mortgages, student loans, auto loans, personal loans, credit cards, etc. At Boost Credit 101 we use Authorized User tradelines to boost credit scores. “Authorized User Tradelines” is a fancy way of saying “credit cards.” Any person who has a credit card has a certain number of AU spots they can add people to. When a person is added, the lender, be it Chase, Discover, TD Bank, and others, reports the data to the credit bureaus. The data being reported is the payment history, limit, and age. When this positive data is reported, the credit score goes up. Someone may ask, why don’t I just have a friend or family member add me to their cards? This is certainly possible, but this can do more harm than good, as the utilization may be high, which hurts the score, or they may have missed payments (even one negates the positive effect of the data). This is why it is smart to utilize a company like Boost Credit 101, as we have an inventory of cardholders nationwide who have contracts with us guaranteeing their cards have perfect history and remain below 10% utilization.
Do yourself a favor and save some money, too. Don’t believe these claims: they’re very likely signs of a scam. Indeed, attorneys at the Federal Trade Commission, the nation’s consumer protection agency, say they’ve never seen a legitimate credit repair operation making those claims. The fact is there’s no quick fix for creditworthiness. You can improve your credit report legitimately, but it takes time, a conscious effort, and sticking to a personal debt repayment plan.
Another major contributing factor is my perfect track record of on time payments. According to Credit Karma, I have a 100% record of consistent, on-time payments. I manage to never miss a payment by maintaining my own personal ”˜bills’ calendar, which tells me when all of my bills are due. I even set reminders one week early to allow room for any mistakes.

We don’t provide lists, because that is putting our sales goals above your credit goals. If anyone is giving you a list, that’s what they’re doing: putting their sales goals above your credit goals. We’ve written about tradelines lists previously. Speaking of goals, you should try our new tradeline and credit analysis tool, which will help you determine if tradelines are right for you. Also, if you have a CPN, we can’t and won’t work with you 🙁 So, hope that was helpful information.

If you're close to maxing out your cards, removing the debt should increase your score after the low or zero balances show up on your credit reports—likely in the following month or so. Don't have enough cash lying around to make a big payment? Another strategy is to transfer the debt to an installment loan—say, a personal loan—or a home-equity line of credit. Such debts don't factor into utilization ratios. Plus, the presence of the loan or HELOC on your credit report could improve your mix of credit, which accounts for 10% of a FICO score.

A simple credit report error could wreak havoc on an otherwise respectable score. It's estimated that 20% of credit reports contain errors, and if you spot one on yours, fixing it could give your score an immediate boost. According to the Federal Trade Commission, 20% of consumers who dispute credit report errors see their scores rise as a result, so it pays to review your credit report and make sure it's completely accurate.

Credit utilization is how much of your available credit you are utilizing and contributes significantly to your overall score. It’s calculated by taking your total credit balances divided by your total borrowing power. Why is it so important? Lenders want to see that you aren’t using so much of your available borrowing power that it becomes a challenge to pay everything back. Best practice is to keep your credit utilization below 30 percent. To improve your credit utilization quickly:

If you find information that is incorrect, you can file a dispute. Remember too, that items on your credit report that you don't recognize could also be potential signs of fraudulent activity — someone working to secure credit in your name for their own use. Make sure you're clear on items that could potentially be fraudulent, versus those that may simply be inaccurate.

Credit scoring models usually take into account how much you owe compared to how much credit you have available, called your credit utilization rate or your balance-to-limit ratio. Basically it's the sum of all of your revolving debt (such as your credit card balances) divided by the total credit that is available to you (or the total of all your credit limits).
